Kinko’s buys Blue Sky wind energy and increases green power use nearly 80 percent

CASPER, Wyo. – Kinko’s, Inc., announced substantial new green power and green tag agreements that raise the company’s estimated annual renewable power purchases by nearly 80 percent, to more than 27 million kWh in 18 states. The deals include Kinko’s® first purchases in Wyoming, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.

In Wyoming, two locations serviced by Pacific Power are purchasing wind energy through the utility’s Blue Sky renewable program. For an additional $1.95 per month each, residential and business customers can buy 100-kilowatt hour block increments of Blue Sky which support the production of electricity generated from new wind power facilities. More than 835 Wyoming homes and businesses purchase Blue Sky renewable wind energy.

More than 25 percent of Kinko’s U.S. branches now buy power from renewable sources including 71 locations now fulfilling 100 percent of their energy demands with green power. As a result, Kinko’s now helps avert more than 31 million pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions each year. The renewable power used by Kinko’s on an annual basis is now equivalent to the power used by over 3,000 U.S. households every year.

Purchasing one block of Blue Sky wind energy each month for a year has the environmental benefit of planting nearly a half-acre of trees or not driving a car more than 2,500 miles.*

“Kinko’s Global Commitment sets standards for incorporating sustainable business practices that generate economic, social and environmental value today and for future generations,” said Larry
Rogero, director of environmental affairs for Kinko’s. “Building our renewable energy use is a cornerstone to our growing sustainability efforts. Green power purchases reduce our environmental footprint and set a positive example for our team members, our customers and our communities.”

“Kinko’s continued expansion of its green power purchase represent the company’s continued leadership in the pursuit of sustainable business practices,” said Jonathan Lash, President of World Resources Institute (WRI). WRI is an environmental think tank that convenes the Green Power Market Development Group (www.thegreenpowergroup.org ), a collaboration of WRI, Kinko’s, and other leading corporations dedicated to building corporate markets for green power.  “WRI encourages other companies considering sustainable business practices to explore the benefits of similar commitments.”

About Blue Sky

Blue Sky gives Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming and Idaho customers the opportunity to buy renewable energy in 100-kilowatt-hour block increments, in addition to their regular monthly electric bill. Pacific Power cannot guarantee that electricity from a particular facility will flow directly to a customer’s home or business. However, the company will deliver to the regional grid an amount of renewable energy equal to the amount of a customer’s block purchase. All Blue Sky purchases help support renewable energy generation. Utah Power purchases power or certificates associated with power from renewable power plants.
